Designed as a pioneering model of sustainable community architecture, the Northmoor Village Community Centre features the UK's first solar space-heating system of its kind. The project demonstrates how innovative low-carbon design, natural materials, and passive environmental strategies can dramatically reduce energy demand, carbon emissions, and long-term operating costs.

The building captures and stores solar energy for space heating, significantly reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. Locally sourced stone and lime render reinforce the connection to place while minimising embodied carbon. Passive solar principles, natural shading, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient lighting work together to create a comfortable, low-energy environment throughout the year.

The result is a highly sustainable community building with exceptionally low energy consumption, reduced CO₂ emissions, and low running costs, providing lasting environmental and economic benefits for the village.

The project secured support from the Millennium Commission, Action with Communities in Rural England, the Rural Development Commission, the Shell Better Britain Campaign, and local and district councils.
