Located on a small island on the River Thames in the heart of Oxford, this innovative renewable energy project combines clean electricity generation with environmental education and public engagement. Designed to showcase the potential of sustainable infrastructure, the development includes a hydroelectric power station, visitor centre, fish pass, and major river engineering works.

Working in partnership with the Environment Agency, the project delivered a new hydroelectric generator alongside what was, at the time, the largest tilting weir gate in the UK, enhancing river management and flood control while supporting renewable energy production. A new fish pass was also integrated, ensuring the development improves ecological connectivity and biodiversity within the river environment.

The Archimedes screw turbine generates enough clean, renewable electricity to power approximately 60 homes, providing a low-carbon energy source while demonstrating the benefits of sustainable hydroelectric technology.

The visitor centre offers a unique, close-up experience of the hydropower system in operation, allowing visitors to safely observe the turbine, sluice mechanisms, and water management infrastructure. Educational displays provide insight into the River Thames ecosystem, local wildlife, and the importance of renewable energy in creating a more sustainable future.

This project demonstrates how renewable energy, environmental stewardship, sustainable engineering, and public education can be successfully integrated into a single landmark development, creating long-term environmental and community value in Oxford.
