AB Architecture & Environment were commissioned to reimagine the Old Barn and New Barn, creating a design that respects the historic character of the existing structures while embracing the opportunities offered by sustainable architecture and renewable energy. Situated within the curtilage of a listed building, the project carefully balances heritage conservation with exceptional environmental performance.

The conversion transforms the historic barns into two highly energy-efficient homes, incorporating a ground source heat pump, discreet roof-integrated photovoltaic panels and passive solar design principles. New private courtyards to the rear of the main barn maximise natural daylight and solar gain, contributing to reduced energy demand while creating attractive outdoor living spaces.

Natural and locally appropriate materials have been used throughout, including traditional oak roofing and natural limestone cladding, with reclaimed materials incorporated wherever possible. The design retains and celebrates original architectural features, preserving the character of the traditional agricultural buildings while adapting them for modern living.

Exceeding Building Regulations energy performance standards, the development significantly reduces carbon emissions and enhances occupant comfort, health and wellbeing. Rainwater harvesting systems, integrated renewable technologies and a fabric-first approach ensure long-term sustainability, while the layout remains closely aligned with the historic arrangement of barns and stables on the site. The result is a sensitive heritage barn conversion that demonstrates how historic buildings can be successfully adapted to deliver high-performance, low-carbon homes for the future.
