Our award-winning proposal for The Living Rainforest near Newbury, Berkshire won a competition to create one of Europe’s most sustainable tropical greenhouse and visitor centre developments. Designed to combine environmental performance with an exceptional visitor experience, the scheme showcases innovative low-carbon architecture and sustainable construction.

A large-span timber structure provides a flexible exhibition space, while high-performance glazing maximises natural daylight and reduces energy demand. The highly insulated timber-framed building incorporates recycled-content insulation and sustainably sourced materials throughout, reflecting a holistic approach to environmental design.

Renewable energy technologies are integrated across the development, with a biomass heating system supplying both the visitor centre and tropical greenhouses, while photovoltaic panels generate on-site renewable electricity. The result is a pioneering sustainable building that demonstrates how architecture can support education, biodiversity, and low-carbon living.
