Using a holistic building energy modelling approach, AB Architecture & Environment identified a package of targeted retrofit measures for Staircase X at All Souls College, delivering a remarkable 90% reduction in energy demand. Through detailed energy analysis, option appraisal, and cost-benefit assessment, we modelled and evaluated multiple interventions to determine the most effective and economically viable route to carbon reduction.
The final strategy combines eight high-impact measures: roof insulation, internal wall insulation, cellar ceiling insulation, high-performance replacement windows, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), air source heat pumps, solar thermal technology, and low-energy lighting. Together, these integrated improvements create a cost-effective pathway to enhanced building performance, reduced operational carbon emissions, and long-term sustainability within it's historic setting.
